Mountain bike trails
For mountain bike lovers, there is a wide variety of trails, but we recommend two routes that are accessible to most cyclists:
- Part of the famous GR22 Historical Villages, the route from Idanha-a-Velha to Monsanto by mountain bike is a real journey back in time. This route takes you along paths that criss-cross history, linking two of the region’s most emblematic villages. Get ready for a route with demanding climbs and landscapes that will live long in the memory.
- The Marechal Carmona Dam Route is a route in which nature is the protagonist. Here, cyclists can enjoy panoramic views of the well-known Idanha-a-Nova dam, while pedaling along dirt tracks, perfect for those looking for a moderate challenge and total immersion in the landscape.
Road Cycling Routes
For those who prefer the fluidity of asphalt, the roads of Monsanto are the perfect setting to test your endurance and enjoy incredible scenery.
- The Red Route, known for its inclines and curves, is a challenging trail that surrounds the mystical village of Monsanto, known as the Portugal’s Most Portuguese Village. The steep climbs are rewarded with breathtaking views.
- The Black Route is the definitive route for more experienced cyclists. This route requires physical preparation, with long, steep sections. It’s an invitation to challenge your limits, while the landscape unfolds in front of you, revealing the rugged beauty of Beira Baixa.
Whatever you choose, the experience of cycling in Beira Baixa is an opportunity to connect with the nature, history and culture of the region.
